Study Claims That Cockroaches Have Personality Types

How would you react if you know that cockroaches, one of the most dreaded creatures is proven to have personalities according to a recent study. Cockroaches were known to be resilient. Reports from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki incidents proved that they can survive  at all. Recently, scientists from the Universit√© Libre de Bruxelles have found through their latest study that cockroaches have personalities too.

Believe it or not, a research team was able to give light over a round arena with two ‘shelters’ to see if the cockroaches which are known to prefer dark spaces would immediately seek out shade. The study discovered that contrary to public perception and the predictions of the scientists, the cockroaches did not all necessarily head straight for shelter. Instead of heading straight, the insects spenr unpredictable amount of time before they decide on what to do. The trait led the team to believe that it was governed by theil cockroaches' ‘personality traits’.

You can categorize the dreaded insects, there are ‘brave’ cockroaches that may quickly come to a decision while ‘shy’ cockroaches will totally wait a long time to see what their braver friends do and follow the crowd.

‘The fact – and we didn’t expect it – is that they always reach this consensus, So we expected that some groups have more trouble than others to resist consensus or to choose a shelter, but at the end, no, they always finished aggregated. So it is something really inside the individuals or in the cockroaches. So that was really, that was amazing.’ - Isaac Planas to Reuters.

Knowing that cockroaches may have personality types actually gives light on their evolutionary advantage. It may be the reason why they get to survive the bombings, earthquakes, etc.
