Assassination: Autistic Briton Gets One Year Over Attempt To Shoot Trump

A twenty-year-old British citizen was sentenced in prison by a federal court in Las Vegas for stealing a uniformed officer's gun during a campaign rally last June, in an attempt to kill then presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Michael Sanford, 20, pretended to seek an autograph as means to acquire a firearm. Sanford admitted that he intended to kill Trump using the weapon, and that he prepared for the act for 'about a year' by practice shooting at a gun range a day prior.

Sanford pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function in September, facing up to twenty years in prison. His lawyers argued that Sanford suffers from a mental illness and therefore cannot be held liable for the incident, during which he was experiencing a psychotic episode.

While the British youth was deemed guilty, he was only sentenced to a year in prison--with Judge James Mahan citing medical problems.

“You should not be ashamed or embarrassed about it,” Mahan said. "You need medication. You’re not a hardened criminal. You’re not evil or sociopath like a lot of people we have. I don’t think you wanted to kill anybody. This was just some crazy stunt that your mind told you to do.”

Lynne Sanford, Michael Sanford’s mother, has requested that he be allowed to serve his prison sentence in the United Kingdom so that he can have access to the psychiatric treatment that he needs.
